Not sure you can pick up the skills in a day, or whether motorbikes are even for you? Book a pre-CBT trial session, one-to-one with an instructor.
Email usCBT is training, not a test — no pass or fail. Usually one day of 6–8 hours; most riders on an automatic bike get the certificate the same day.
The certificate — DL196
Finish all five elements and you're issued a DL196, valid two years — ride with L-plates up to 125cc from 17. Going for a full licence? Take your CBT on a manual bike.

Getting to know the machine — controls, maintenance, stands, starting the engine.
Pulling away, slow control, figure-of-eight, U-turn, gears, emergency stop.
Classroom session — equipment, safety, legal requirements, the Highway Code and preparation for the road ride.
Minimum two hours on the road, in radio contact with your instructor.

Usually one day, about 6–8 hours. It depends on how quickly you pick up the skills — if you need more training it can run to 2–3 days. Most people on an automatic bike get the certificate at the end of the first day.
A valid full or provisional UK driving licence — you must bring it on the day — very good balance riding a push bike, and the jeans and boots above.
If you plan to go for a full licence, book your CBT on a geared / manual motorcycle. If you've only ridden automatic scooters, take a gear conversion course before starting Direct Access.
Your DL196 lasts two years. It lets you ride with L-plates up to 125cc from 17, or a moped up to 50cc at 16 — no pillion passengers and no motorways.
With a couple of months on a 125cc, most riders complete the training and both tests in about 2–3 days. New to manual bikes? You'll start with half or a full day on a 125cc. The free assessment tells you exactly what you need.
