CBT questions
Do I need my own bike or kit?
We provide the bike, helmet, jacket, gloves and waterproofs — free on every course. Just bring strong jeans with no rips or holes, and sturdy boots that cover your ankles.
How long does a CBT take?
CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) usually takes one day, about 6–8 hours. It depends on how quickly you pick up the skills — if you need more training it can run to 2–3 days. Most people on an automatic bike get the certificate at the end of the first day.
What do I need to bring?
A valid full or provisional UK driving licence — you must bring it on the day — very good balance riding a push bike, and the jeans and boots above.
Automatic or geared bike?
If you plan to go for a full licence, book your CBT on a geared / manual motorcycle. If you've only ridden automatic scooters, take a gear conversion course before starting Direct Access.
How long is my certificate valid?
Your DL196 lasts two years. It lets you ride with L-plates up to 125cc from 17, or a moped up to 50cc at 16 — no pillion passengers and no motorways.
